The final stretch – Brady Rymer and Randy Kaplan Kickstarters ending soon!

Both Brady Rymer and Randy Kaplan are ready to make their next children’s albums and have launched a Kickstarter campaign in hopes to support the recording and production process. With just 4 days left in Brady’s project and 7 days in Randy’s project, there is still time to donate and show your support for these hard working artists. Both Brady and Randy are distinguished children’s artists that regularly produce quality music with depth and a whole lotta soul. Plus, the music just sounds amazing! For those new to Kickstarter: Kickstarter is a fundraising site that allows fans, friends, family and the general public to back a creative endeavor, such as the making of an album.

Both Randy and Brady have been a big part of our lives since my daughter (almost 5) was an infant, but they both have been making music for much longer than that. As such, I have backed both of these campaigns.

With that, I encourage you to check out each campaign, consider showing your support and ultimately  becoming a part of the music you want to hear.

JUST SAY HI! Brady Rymer’s new album for families that ROCK – Brady is a soulful singer with a tender heart and a ton of spirit. His music is uplifting, engaging and captures the spirit of good ole rock n’ roll. In addition to receiving a 2009 Grammy nomination, Brady has received awards and accolades for his work on Love Me For Who I Am, an album inspired by children affected by autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and related disorders. Just Say Hi! will be Brady’s 7th CD and it promises to be a good one! As Brady mentions on his site: “Just Say Hi! is the most personal batch of songs I’ve written; full of kindness, friendship, and love of family.  Songs about things like falling in love with the ice cream girl, learning to play grandma’s red piano, and just crankin’ up your little light of love and lettin’ it shine.”

Throughout his campaign, Brady has been posting updates with the latest one being a snippet of a video for the song “Ice Cream Girl,” inspired by Brady’s wife who drove a Good Humor ice cream truck as a summer job. Brady also offers some fun incentives with a broad range of pledge opportunities. Just in time for the holidays, Brady is offering 3 holiday tracks at $1 or more as a thank you for pledging. They are great songs! One of our favorites is “Untangling the Christmas Lights.” Other incentives include monster stickers and friendship bracelets, t-shirts, personalized and advanced copies of the CD, singing on the record and for those interested in pledging at a higher level, Brady is giving away his first Gibson guitar. So check it out! Even just a few dollars will help!

Randy Kaplan’s new not-JUST-for-kids CD – Randy Kaplan is regularly referred to as a folk troubadour within the children’s genre. His influences run deep within the folk and blues genres and he skillfully delivers songs that are filled with healthy doses of wit and charm. Randy is a master at combining song and storytelling which is directly linked to his uncanny ability to be honest, humble and totally authentic. His lyrics are clever and written in such a way that tickles the funny bone of both adults and children, while also warming their hearts with a rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young,” which was selected for the Putumayo Kids American Playgound album. His most recent album, Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie, a collection of Country Blues and Ragtime for kids, received high honors and awards including being selected by People magazine (August 2012 issue) as one of 8 Cool Kids’ Albums Now!. Randy also regularly appears on critics lists as one of the top children’s performers to see in concert. And I can personally say that is absolutely accurate! Randy is a natural in front of a crowd and is usually surrounded by groups of children who can be heard shouting, laughing and even yodeling along with him. Randy makes music that he enjoys and feels confident that his audience will enjoy.

Which brings me to Randy’s Kickstarter project. With additional support, Randy will be able to create his 13th album to date (his 5th not-JUST-for-kids album). On his Kickstarter page, you can listen to clips for popular songs from previous albums including “No Nothing,” a song about a monkey who was raised by ducks (one of our favorites!) and the “The Mosquito Song,” among others. Randy also explains how he has been producing family records up until now and what his plans are for making the next one. Backers can also receive advanced mp3s or copies of the new CD, the new CD with a special thank you mentioned in the credits, or even a personal concert via Skype with Randy. There are a broad range of incentives here as well, so take a look and consider helping to make the number 13 a lucky one for Randy!

Video – “Baby Born Today” – Elizabeth Mitchell and Friends (from The Sounding Joy) + FREE DOWNLOAD

the_sounding_joy_300The Sounding Joy, Elizabeth Mitchell’s first full-length holiday album (released under the Smithsonian Folkways label), is steeped in tradition and community. For this album, Mitchell (and a group of friends) dug deep into Ruth Crawford Seeger’s 1953 songbook American Folk Songs for Christmas to give these songs a modern age twist. Although, I use the word “modern” loosely here as the arrangements are just as reverent in tone and very much embody the spirit of Seeger’s versions.

The first video from The Sounding Joy is for the song “Baby Born Today.” Joining Mitchell and her husband, Daniel Littleton, are 6 performers, one of which is Natalie Merchant who also wrote the Introduction in the liner notes. This is a lovely video, shot in natural light, which perfectly captures the expression of pure joy each singer feels as they deliver their verses. The energy among the group is certainly palpable and filled with emotional depth. I particularly love Littleton’s guitar work, as well as the sprightly accents of Ruthy Ungar’s and Simi Stone’s strings.

“Baby Born Today” is a call-and-response type of song filled with beautifully layered melodies reminiscent of what you might find in a congregation or among carolers. While “Baby Born Today” contains Christian narratives, the blend of folk, some light gospel, and rhythmic stomping, will enliven the spirit of any listener regardless of their religious denomination (or lack thereof).

BONUS: Smithsonian Folkways is offering a FREE DOWNLOAD of “Children, Go Where I Send Thee” featuring Mitchell and Littleton’s daughter, Storey (who I just can’t hear enough of), as well as Dan Zanes. It’s an energetic song filled with folk and a little bit o’ country that will get you clapping and singing from the first note. Definitely one of my favorite songs on the album! Also, when you click on the “FREE DOWNLOAD” link above, you will be taken to the Smithsonian Folkways page which also allows you to download the liner notes for The Sounding Joy. Highly Recommended!

GrandmomDelight_Header

Daria Marmaluk-Hajioannou, simply known as DARIA, is dedicated to educating children about world music. As a world traveler and internationally known folksinger, DARIA draws from her experiences and delivers songs based on American and world folk music traditions.

We also enjoy DARIA’s monthly songs, which feature songs that are popular or represent celebrations in different countries around the world. This month, Daria posted lots of goodies for the upcoming holidays. In honor of Hanukkah, DARIA created two videos, the first of which is sung in English and Ladino (a mix of Spanish and Hebrew) for those that might be celebrating Hanukkah in Spain.

If you are already a fan of Putumayo Kids, you will have no problem adding DARIA into your world music rotation. She is a talented musician with a beautiful voice that naturally captures the essence of a diverse range of cultures while also providing resources for kids to learn about world music in an experiential way. As Daria writes in her bio, “its all about empowering kids… letting them explore the world of music in a way that unlocks the amazing talent and inner beauty they naturally possess.” Definitely check her out!

“Hannukah, O Hannukah (Introducing the Menurkey!).” – The Dirty Sock Funtime Band

The term “Menurkey” may sound silly but the story behind its creation is awesome! A Menurkey is a turkey shaped menorah that was created by Asher Weintraub, a 10-year-old boy from New York City. Asher initially thought of the idea based on the fact that the start of Hanukkah and Thanksgiving fall on the same day this year. And, thanks to a very successful Kickstarter campaign (820 backers), a limited flock of Menurkey’s will proudly shine this Thanksgivukkah and beyond. You can read more about how Asher created the Menurkey at the official Menurkey site.

“Hannukah, O Hannukah (Introducing the Menurkey!)” is available for purchase on iTunes as is their recent release The Dirty socks COME CLEAN.

MrPalindrome06I Want A Hippopatomus for Hanukkah – Mr. Palindrome

Mr. Palindrome, an Australia-based kindie artist who has recently picked up lots of great press for his album Smiley Face Sticker, delivers an entertaining adaptation of the original song written by John Rox (and made famous by 10-year-old Gayla Peevey) in 1953. The video is colorful and contains the fastest spelling of Hippopotamus I’ve ever seen or heard. After you are through unwrapping your gelt and spinning your dreidels, grab you kiddos and play along with this one!

Mr. Palindrome’s Smiley Face Sticker can be heard and purchased through his Bandcamp page

picture-135Joanie Leeds and the NightlightsTofurky

Joanie Leeds talks turkey in her song “Tofurky,” a playful tune for those who prefer a vegetarian/vegan option for Thanksgiving. Leeds has a knack for producing quality videos and this one holds up in the same way. Cute video, great production value, catchy song.

“Tofurky” can be downloaded for FREE via Joanie’s Bandcamp page which can be accessed through the Bandcamp widget below.

“Tofurky” is available from iTunes. Also, be sure to check out Joanie’s video for “Family Tree,” which won her first prize in the Children’s Category of the USA Songwriting Contest.

After reading a NYTimes article called “Holidays Holding Hands,” Deborah DidiPop Poppink wrote this song and had it up on YouTube in about 5 1/2 hours . The video contains tips about what to make for dinner and how the calendars collide on these two fun holidays – Hanukkah and Thanksgiving.

From their recent release, Bear Hunt, Josh & The Jamtones created a video for “Fill It Up,” The song has a nice swingin’ reggae rhythm indicative of the band’s sound. This is a great video for a Friday, especially after a long night of Halloween activities.

Although the video is simple, it does a good job conveying the band’s sense of humor while sending positive vibes out to listeners.

View This: “Where Do Monsters Go When It’s Not Halloween” – Ratboy Jr.

51x98urmivL._SL500_AA280_Halloween is just around the corner! In perfect timing, Ratboy Jr. just released a video for their song “Where Do Monsters Go When It’s Not Halloween?” To help them illustrate possible fallbacks and day jobs for a variety of monsters, Ratboy Jr. gets some artistic assistance from the 1st graders at the Woodstock Day School. Through drawings, each scenario is matched up to the words of the song, i.e. mummies cleaning windows in New York City and zombies driving zambonis, for example. Even Frankenstein grabs the mic on this one.

“Where Do Monsters Go When It’s Not Halloween” is from Ratboy Jr’s 2013 release, Champions of the Universe. It’s an awesome album brimming with creativity that taps into the depths of kids’ imaginations. When we first heard this song Emily, who enjoys donning a Hulk mask and shouting “HULK SMASH!,” sat straight up, eyes wide, and genuinely asked “YEAH! Where do monsters go when it’s not Halloween?” This priceless sense of wonder and curiosity is why Ratboy Jr. makes listening to music fun. When you think about it, it’s a great question, right?

Todd and Cookie’s Epic 3 Song Starter Pack + Episode 1 – Catapult of Destiny Cartoon

1239005_1420353581524763_223750771_n

Get on board, step inside, soarin’ on a magic ride.
Roarin’ towards the other side where only rainbows hide.
On the Great Space Coaster (Oh-oh oh)

The lines above are part of the theme song from one of my favorite childhood TV shows, The Great Space Coaster. Each episode took place on an inhabited asteroid (Coasterville) and followed the story of 3 musicians who were brought there by a space coaster. Along the way, they met new friends in the form of zany puppet characters. I think I might be part of a small population who remembers this show, but it was a classic. It was adventurous and totally off-the-wall funny for its time!

This brings me to the latest pairing of kindie rockstars whose debut project brings me the same kind of joy. Todd McHatton and Mista Cookie Jar (CJ Pizarro), or simply put, Todd and Cookie, recently debuted their first mini album, Todd and Cookie’s Epic 3 Song Starter Pack, along with a world premiere of their cartoon, The Great Adventures of Todd and Cookie. Episode 1, called “World of Rock,” illustrates how the two rockstars are catapulted to destiny when a mysterious creature asks, “Anybody wanna rock?” You’ll have to watch to see how this story unfolds. It’s a truly visionary experience that promises to take you on a magical, mystical adventure unlike anything the kindie world has ever seen!

The pairing of Todd and Cookie  is not something people might have predicted or expected, but together they complement each other very well. In fact, the parallels between the two, is what I am most impressed by. Their sound is overflowing with authenticity, creativity and a unique sense of humor. They regularly stretch the boundaries of their imaginations, creating compelling experiences for their audience. And they also incorporate family as an essential part in each of their respective careers.

McHatton is a puppeteer and an artist whose cartoon drawings can be seen on his album covers and throughout his videos. He is well-known for his wildly popular single “I Think I’m A Bunny,” featuring daughter Hazel and lovable purple puppet, Marvy Monstone.

Pizarro is a master rhymer and lyricist with a whole vocabulary of his own. Typically, as Mista Cookie Jar, he performs with The Chocolate Chips which feature the supporting vocals of his step-daughter, Ava Flava. MCJ, known for his retro fashion and diverse musical style, has produced many popular singles including “Inner Rock Child” and “Lover Not A Fighter.”

Each track on Todd and Cookie’s Epic 3 Song Starter Pack delivers a concoction of sounds that blend the softness of Todd’s dreamy, psychedelic sound with Cookie’s groovy, hip hop sensibilities. My favorite tune, “All These Magical Things,” has a nice melodic flow while “HotchToozZee” is a hodgepodge of fun. The album ends with “Your My Bestest Bro” which is an ode to Todd and Cookie’s relationship and could easily be the theme song for The Great Adventures of Todd and Cookie.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride! The duo will be releasing web comics & cartoons every 3 months chronicling Todd and Cookie as they explore the catapult of destiny! You can receive updates by following their site as well as their YouTube channel.

Listen to and purchase the tunes from Todd and Cookie’s Epic 3 Song Starter Pack through the Bandcamp widget below. Recommended for ages 4 -8.

View This: Lishy Lou and Lucky Too – TV Show Intro

LLALT_POSTER_WEB

Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band are having a wonderful year! ¡Fantastico!, their first Spanish-language album was just nominated for a Grammy and they are about to release (October 1) their next album Lishy Lou and Lucky Too which is the companion for a TV show.

As you can see from the intro, the show is filled with vibrant color and character (and colorful characters!). Looking at this video, and really any pictorial representation of Lucky Diaz and Alisha Gaddis, the notion that what you wear reflects your personality comes to mind. Although, I would say they radiate a whole spectrum of colors, much like a rainbow. Their spectacular display is visible in their music, stage presence and on-screen.

If you didn’t catch the video for the first single, “Thingamajig” from the upcoming album Lishy Lou and Lucky Too, make sure to check it out. It’s a hoot!

View This: “Bigga Bagga” – Key Wilde & Mr. Clarke plus iPad App

A perfect video to head into the weekend! “Bigga Bagga”, a song off of Key Wilde & Mr Clarke‘s album Pleased to Meet You (currently on the Grammy ballot!), gets video treatment.

The video features a montage of curious illustrations, penned by Wilde, while the song challenges to make your tongue numb. It’s good fun and I dare you to sing along!

Also, check out their Ipad app by Mibblio which features their song “Animal Alphabet” and lots of irresistible illustrations.
